A gas fireplace that will not respond to its remote is usually flat batteries, and there are two sets of them, not one.
The handset is the set everyone thinks of. The other lives in the receiver, a small box tucked inside the fireplace behind the lower grille or louvre, and it is the one people miss. If the handset has fresh batteries and nothing has changed, the receiver is where to look next.
