Can a stone fireplace catch fire?
The stone itself will not. Heat can weaken mortar over time, though, and that is what causes a system to shift. In Michigan the freeze and thaw cycle works on the flue liner as well, which is why an annual clean and inspection matters.
How long does a stone fireplace last?
Effectively as long as the building it is in. Stone is one of the few things in a house you are unlikely to replace.
How do you maintain a stone fireplace?
It is durable and low maintenance. Plain dish soap handles dust. For smoke staining and creosote a stronger cleaner may be needed. Check with your stone supplier before putting any chemical on stone, because some finishes will not take it.
